PUBLIC SECT0R: New chair Gaudin aims to help PROs on new legislation

Chelmsford Borough Council's communications head Pat Gaudin has been appointed chair of The Institute of Public Relations Local Government Group.

Her appointment was made at last week's group AGM in Birmingham. She replaces Sheffield City Council's comms head Carl Welham who has stood down from the chairmanship after three years in the role.

Guest speaker was David Taylor, a partner with law firm Crutes and an expert on the Freedom of Information Act, which comes into force for local authorities in 2005.

Gaudin said a professional development programme to help council PROs better understand the legislation was being planned.

The group is to talk with the IPR about a dispute over membership figures.

New rules mean it will gain a percentage of member's subscription fees, but while the group estimates its members at around 150, the IPR believes the figure may be half that.
