DIARY: Harverson may be on Man Utd's PR side but Baggies' Mace is tops

Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion ('The Baggies') may be at the opposite ends of the Premiership but it's pleasing to know solidarity exists between their PR men.

During a recent interview on football365.com, Old Trafford PR chief Paddy Harverson was asked which other teams' PR operations he admired, he said: 'I like what Ipswich do. Paul Mace, my equivalent at West Brom, does a really good job.'

Mace says he has known Harverson since he was comms director at Leicester City during the 1990s, when Harverson was still a jobbing hack at The Financial Times.

'I remember in 1997-1998 I got a rollicking from my chairman for confirming some details to Paddy about Leicester's flotation that perhaps I shouldn't have done,' he says.

When Diary called, Mace had just returned from the US, where he had attended the Superbowl to check out the press facilities: 'Paddy's picked up tips from the US thanks to Man Utd's link with the New York Yankees. Covering sport in the US must be the best job ever: the facilities are fantastic.'

But when asked what tricks of the US sports PR trade Mace plans to filch for the Hawthorns, he goes all coy: 'I'd rather retain an air of mystery about what tips I picked up.'
