Chipotle’s Laurie Schalow wears a unique set of hats — as the chief corporate affairs and food safety officer, not only does she manage comms for the company, but she also is directly responsible for overseeing food safety initiatives.
Schalow joined PRWeek’s senior reporter and opinion editor Thomas Moore to discuss the many facets of her position, as well as how Chipotle has handled the transition to food safety during the COVID-19 pandemic and the role of social media in its marketing.
She also talked about the company’s values and how that drives their food safety and messaging decisions.
“Our mission is to cultivate a better world. That’s our purpose. So we have principles such as food with integrity,” Schalow explained. “That means we’re not always going to have the cheapest ingredient because we’re very purposeful about understanding where we source from, how the animals are raised, what those farms look like and investing in young farmers to make sure we can sustain that business going forward.”
