The Government needs to provide more support for the communications industry otherwise Christmas will be “a bleak time” for agencies and practitioners.
These are the words of PRCA director-general Francis Ingham, who has criticised the extension of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme hours before it was due to expire at midnight on Saturday (31 October).
He is particularly worried about the uncertainty that many businesses face today, as England prepares for the enforcement of new lockdown restrictions, planned to last for at least four weeks, starting from Thursday.
“For many in our industry, this could be quite a bleak time,” Ingham told PRWeek.
“The Government needs to do far more than it is doing at the moment, because otherwise, many people will lose their jobs or income. The Government needs to provide a comprehensive programme of support for the economy, and that includes employees and the self-employed. It needs to provide a roadmap of lockdown, because the impact on business confidence of this… is really negative.”
Ingham told PRWeek that the uncertainty and the Government's frequent changes of messaging are hurting the PR industry because businesses cannot plan ahead.
