Business editor Jim Ledbetter said Gumbel will be following 'meaty' corporate issues: 'He will be investigative, penetrating inside the heart of Europe.'
Gumbel has written freelance pieces for the magazine, including an analysis of the collapse of Belgian airline Sabena and an in-depth look at FMCG giant Nestle. 'That's the sort of story I see him getting his teeth into.
(Articles on) EU initiatives are not necessarily him,' Ledbetter added.
Gumbel spent 16 years with The Wall Street Journal as bureau chief in Los Angeles, Paris, Moscow and Berlin, and has also written for LA Magazine, Fortune and Business.com. He reports to editor Eric Pooley, who took over the 600,000-circulation TIME Europe, Middle East and Africa last year (PRWeek, 18 October 2002).
Amanda Ripley has joined the London editorial team as staff writer from TIME in the US. She will cover breaking news plus stories on crime, justice and religion.
