Winner: 'Embracing Complexity' by JPA Health for Autistica
This campaign aimed to highlight experiences of people with multiple neurodevelopmental conditions (NDCs) - in particular, raising awareness among policy makers that many have more than one NDC.
A coalition of 16 charities, led by Autistica, surveyed their members to compile The Embracing Complexity Report, which included a call to action for joined up services.
The Report launched in Parliament in May 2019 with Health Secretary Matt Hancock mentioning his experience of dyslexia.
The Embracing Complexity Twitter account gained more than 1,400 followers across a range of critical stakeholders. Impressions from the launch in May to December 2019 totalled 458,900.
The campaign spurred a change in thinking. At the launch, Hancock and Justice Minister Edward Argar discussed plans to establish a new cross-departmental neurodiversity unit to provide a joined-up approach across health and social care, justice and education; a key call to action of The Embracing Complexity Report.
Since the launch, the Coalition has supported over £600,000 of joint research, and worked with organisations such as the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health to launch a second report sharing best practice for joined-up service redesign. The original 16-strong coalition of charities now totals 53.
In the wake of COVID-19, the Coalition engaged with NHS England and NICE to secure updated guidelines to ensure healthy people with NDCs are not denied critical care.
