Elliot & Co (formerly Prospr) has grown in Malaysia from a two-man team to a total of 12 team members with a majority of staff coming in this year. The team also has a wholly owned office. Heading this market is Ryan Lee, the first employee in Malaysia. Lee was previously at Rantau PR (now known as Rantau Golin) and previously served brands such as Uber, Boon Siew Honda, Pfizer and Carousell.

Within two years, Lee led the company towards hitting a seven-figure revenue and has been heavily involved with the overall business strategies both in Malaysia and Indonesia where Elliot has just launched.

"Elliot & Co was formed from recognizing a gap in our industry, where start-ups and SMEs are severely underserved," Jeremy Foo, co-founder of Eliot & Co told PRWeek Asia. "Our vision is to democratise PR, and Malaysia was ideal given the market gap regarding help offered to start-ups and SMEs in the area of PR. Additionally, we felt the close proximity between Singapore and Malaysia allowed us to manage the team better."

In Malaysia, there are a total of 98 per cent SMEs (equivalent to around one million businesses) contributing to 38.3% of GDP, and new startups are emerging and growing in the market. Foo said that many of these local SMEs are underutilising PR to complement their internal marketing efforts.

"Furthermore, we saw a huge potential in Malaysia where 90 per cent of the PR agencies served corporates that only make up 2 per cent of all the businesses. These corporations have more abundance when it comes to capital and resources to tell their story, but this doesn't mean that smaller businesses do not have stories to share as well," said Foo.

"The PR landscape and market [in Malaysia] is pretty similar to Singapore hence we have decided to replicate our unique PR models there. These models are based on the concepts of agility, flexibility, and a strong understanding of each business' unique strengths and weaknesses. I am confident that the Malaysian team will continue to strengthen our local presence."

The Malaysia office currently serves a wide range of clients across tech, education, food & beverage, fashion, beauty, and automotive and key clients include Yayasan Sime Darby, Kohler, Lalamove, Sonno, HealthMetrics, JomRun, Cookhouse.
