40 Under 40 2020 | Nicole Vogrin, Western Union, 38

Nicole Vogrin is a trailblazer. As Western Union’s first chief corporate affairs and communications officer, she spearheads the 170-year-old company’s global corporate brand, affairs and communications strategy.

She and her team have consolidated communications functions under one roof, with a focus on elevating and articulating the company’s position on key environmental, social and governance issues. Under her leadership, these issues encompass the company’s global advocacy efforts for migrants, refugees and displaced people around the world, as well as reducing global environmental impact. She is based at the company’s global headquarters in Denver, Colorado.

Western Union placed greater importance on involving its employees as active participants in company dialogue, ensuring leaders across the organization welcome diversity of thought. Vogrin is a passionate mentor of young female leaders and an advocate for shared, equal opportunities.

She joined Western Union in 2009 after holding finance, accounting and marketing positions in the healthcare and electronics industries in Europe. Within Western Union she has held roles in Europe and the U.S. and served as head of corporate relations and chief of staff to the company’s CEO, Hikmet Ersek, before being promoted to her current role in August 2019.

Since then, the money transfer institution has announced numerous global initiatives, including opening its platform to partners, launching real-time payments and — amid the COVID-19 pandemic — cutting transaction costs by 50% for frontline and essential workers.
