DIARY: Webster has no family information on Safeway

As bidders continue to pile in for retailer Safeway, Diary imagined that Brunswick account director Michael Webster would be one of many City PROs shuffling by the PR check-out. For he is Safeway chairman David Webster's son.

Brunswick assured Diary that Michael didn't work on the Safeway account - and wouldn't want to. A shame, as he may have picked up useful knowledge of his father's employer.

On the subject of the City's biggest current ownership battle, Wal-Mart's UK arm Asda is failing to win media friends.

Last week Surrey and Hants Star editor Alan Franklin slammed a press release from Asda's Farnborough store for its inadequate subbers.

'Janueary', 'Farnborouhg', 'paernts', 'littel' and 'shoppres' were just a few of its spelling mistakes. Asda press officer Rob Kenyon accepted responsibility: 'We are always quick to seize on story ideas. In this case I wasn't so quick as to press spell-check. Lesson learned.'

Asda's City PR firm Bell Pottinger Financial will hope to leave a better impression on journalistic contacts in respect of its client's bid for Safeway.
