Furner Communications gets Year of Disabled brief

Furner Communications has been appointed to handle UK PR for the first European Year of Disabled People.

The consultancy has been chosen by a UK Government-led national co-ordinating committee to work alongside Europe-wide agency Ogilvy PR Worldwide.

The Department for Work and Pensions is the lead body on the committee, whose members also include the Disabilities Rights Commission and sector related charities.

Ogilvy was selected earlier this year by the European Commission to handle the campaign centrally and liaise with 15 separate national efforts.

Furner Communications founder Ben Furner reports to Ogilvy's Brussels office on the account.

A spokeswoman for the Ogilvy team said: 'We are organising the PR network centrally and developing a website, but the work in each country is being handled separately.'

The Ogilvy team reports to Donald Tait, EC employment and social affairs director-general.

A website previewing the year of events across Europe will be unveiled at the end of this month.

Also as part of the year national and local projects for the disabled will take place. Around £1.5m in grants have been made available through UK government and EC funding.
