Currently freelance, Dignam's track record in media publishing includes stints as editor of two UK trade titles, Media Week and Marketing. He was also editor of Ad Age Global in the US.
Dignam said: 'The broadcasting industry is going through seismic changes, and Broadcast has a critical role to play in reporting and making sense of what's happening and why. Broadcast is known for the quality of its journalism and understanding of the business. It is my job to build on that success.'
Broadcast publishing director Jon Baker added: 'Conor has an impressive reputation as an editor of business magazines. He is the ideal person to take Broadcast forward.'
Dignam will step into departed editor Lucy Rouse's shoes on 31 October.
Rouse, who oversaw the title for three years, will return to publisher Emap as a consultant after maternity leave (PRWeek, 2 August).
Acting editor Katy Elliott will revert to being deputy editor, a role she shares with David Wood.
