Silence on ethical code leaves firms shamed by Ecra

Companies who failed to provide environmental reports and details of their codes of conduct have been slated by a new ethical consumer guide.

The Good Shopping Guide by Ethical Consumer Research Associates (Ecra) is the first such guide to blacklist brands on the basis of the ethical performance of their owners.

The report covers over 700 brands, marked on such areas as environmental records, links with oppressive regimes and political donations. The report was compiled over four years from a combination of government data, reports from other campaign groups, and information provided by the companies featured.

Researcher Matthew Fawcett said Erca contacted all the firms, but many ignored its requests for data on environmental and ethical codes: 'If we did not hear back we have given a mark that indicated they didn't have an environmental report or code of practice.'

Some sectors responded better than others. Out of 18 jeans manufacturers, only six responded, while only three shoe shops out of 14 provided environmental reports.
