PRWeek Power Book 2019: Gender balance improves in public sector top 10

The gender balance at the most senior ranks of public sector communications has improved this year, both inside central government and in the wider sector.

Of the 23 major government and non-ministerial government departments, 11 are currently headed by women.

One comms chief, a new entrant at number four in the public sector comms top ten, is Helen Bower, director of comms at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

Before returning to the FCO Bower spent a long stint at Number 10, including as the PM’s official spokeswoman.
