EDITORIAL: A hard slog ahead for Firefly bosses

If Firefly Communications thought it faced a stern challenge with the slump in the TMT market over the last two years, it was nothing compared to the mountain the agency must now climb. Following a failed boardroom coup, a founder-led MBO and four high-level departures in recent weeks, one major client is already thought to have put the agency on notice.

The departing directors were known to have managed a large proportion of the agency's high-paying accounts - which include Motorola, HP, Avaya, AltaVista, Fujitsu and KPMG Consulting. The firm will no doubt be concentrating hard on retaining this business. It is a sorry situation for an agency to be in having thrived for long as the darling of the tech PR sector.

Bringing in fresh talent in the form of former Weber Shandwick executive Cathy Pittham will go some way to steadying the ship, but the remaining board members, wife and husband team Claire Walker and Mark Mellor, will hardly be the envy of their peers this week.
