DIARY: Virgin Mobile PR chief Day parties on at V2002 festival in Chelmsford

If the hospitality at last weekend's V2002 festival is anything to go by, the economic slowdown has clearly not impacted on Virgin Mobile's PR budget.

Diary couldn't help but be impressed by the massed ranks of guests downing free beer and food in the VM hospitality zone at the Chelmsford pop fest.

Virgin Mobile corporate affairs director Steven Day was in ebullient form, spending his weekend greeting the likes of Dermot O'Leary, Badly Drawn Boy and, of course, Diary.

All was going swimmingly for Day and his team until the early hours of Sunday, when early-morning dew caused a van to veer off a grassy service road and smash through a steel fence into the Winnebagos in which VM staff, and PROs from Consolidated Communications, were sleeping.

'We hadn't got a clue what had happened, and all raced out to have a look,' said one Consolidated staffer.

Although insurance details were exchanged, nobody was injured and later that morning Diary spotted an unperturbed Day and friends screeching around the perimeter of the festival site in a golf-buggy.

He later admitted he hadn't had time to catch many bands: 'I saw ten seconds of the Stereo MCs. Oh, and a glimpse of the Chemical Brothers - very loud.'
