In a memo to staff, corporate comms director Lucy Neville-Rolfe, to whom Leake reported, said: 'He intends to return to a role with more direct media involvement where he can make full use of his creative talents.'
A Tesco spokeswoman confirmed no decision has been made on the future of the UK comms director role, which Leake was the first to fill.
Reactive media head Jonathan Church, proactive media head Simon Soffe and team leader Kate Mears, who has responsibility for internal comms, will handle day-to-day running of PR in the UK.
The spokeswoman refused to comment on Leake's recent period of leave.
Leake's exit is the most recent in a wave of senior departures since Neville-Rolfe took charge three years ago.
These have included head of media relations David Sawday, international corporate affairs manager Nicole Lander, PA head Bernard Hughes and corporate and media head Alan McLaughlin.
