UnumProvident appoints Hutson in UK PR chief role

Financial services company UnumProvident has appointed John Hutson to the newly created role of head of PR.

The appointment reflects a decision by the US-based firm to place more emphasis on PR as its UK operation grows.

He said: 'I need to work out what the PR needs are, what the messages are, what the audience is, and what needs to be delivered in terms of PR.'

The company chiefly provides income protection policies for large companies to offer as a benefit to staff.

Under such policies, staff are compensated if they cannot work through illness or injury.

Among Hutson's responsibilities will be providing PR support for the company's campaigning activity. For example, the company is part of the New Beginnings campaign, a long-term, Government-backed initiative to help disabled people to return to work.

Hutson joins from law firm Bevan Ashford, where he was marcoms manager.

The company has 800 staff in the UK.
