Lib Dems recruit CRE comms head as press director

The Liberal Democrats have hired Commission for Racial Equality head of comms Robin Banerji as director of press and broadcasting.

Banerji joined the CRE in April 2000 from a role as senior information officer at the Ministry of Defence (PRWeek, 21 April 2000).

He takes up the post at the Lib Dems' Cowley Street offices at the start of August, and replaces Elizabeth Peplow, who quit to qualify as a solicitor in May this year (PRWeek, 24 May).

Banerji assumes control of the Lib Dem press office team. He will work alongside director of communications David Walter, who focuses on speech-writing, party political broadcasts and media training, and Jackie Rowley, who continues as party leader Charles Kennedy's official spokesperson.

He is tasked with supporting the party's efforts to position itself as the effective opposition at Westminster.

It is understood the CRE has yet to decide on a replacement for Banerji, who reported to director of policy and communications Phil Barnett at the Commission. In the role Banerji oversaw the media relations and publications work of the CRE, in addition to its internal comms work.
