FreedomPay is a market leader in providing secure e-commerce technology for lodging, gaming, retail, restaurants, stadiums and other hospitality merchants.

Smith, who was listed in this year’s PRWeek Power Book and is a PRCA mentor, joins after just nine months at Verifone, where she was VP of Europe for marketing and communications.

"We are truly excited that Liesl is joining our executive team. Liesl brings over 20 years of experience in business marketing and communications and is hugely respected in the industry for her strong business sense and proven results," FreedomPay founder and CEO Tom Durovsik said.

"Liesl will be a critical team player as FreedomPay continues to grow globally and dominate as the leading commerce platform technology available to businesses of all sizes."

At Verifone, Smith applied indirect and direct B2B strategies across several growth markets including the Nordics, France, Germany and the UK.

Prior to Verifone, she led global payments communications at Western Union across five countries including the UK, US and Australia.

Smith has also worked for the Federation of Small Businesses in the UK, representing the interests of 200,000 small and medium-sized businesses, including their views on Brexit. Before her move to PR and comms, she had an accomplished career at the BBC as a journalist, producer and award-winning newsroom editor.

Smith described the payments space as one of the "most exciting industries to be in right now".

"Technology is driving so much change and opportunity for businesses and the consumer – with FreedomPay at the cutting edge. I am thrilled and extremely proud to be part of such an innovative and winning team," she added.
