Breakfast Briefing: Amazon makes big gains in advertising services

The ecommerce heavyweight is on track to pull in about $10 billion a year from ad services sales.

We’re all used to eye-popping numbers in Amazon quarterly results by now, but here’s one especially worth keeping an eye on: $2.5 billion. That’s Q3 net sales in the company’s "other" category, which it has said is mostly comprised of advertising services. The 122% increase from Q3 2017 puts Amazon on pace for $10 billion a year in ad services sales.

President Donald Trump, who was up very early this morning, may get another positive economic talking point in the stretch run before the midterm elections. The Commerce Department is set to release GDP numbers this morning at 8:30 a.m. EST. Experts say economic growth may cool off a bit from Q2 but remain very healthy.

‘The president does not have three cellular phones.’ The White House flat-out denied on Thursday that Chinese and Russian spies have been eavesdropping on Trump’s phone calls on an unsecured mobile device, as reported this week by The New York Times.

But what an opportunity for high-level (government) trolling! Chinese foreign ministry officials responded to the story by suggesting that Trump should use a Huawei device if he’s worried about snooping. Executives at the company, which is essentially locked out of the U.S. market, gleefully posted in approval on WeChat.

This may not have gone as planned. Tesla CEO Elon Musk asked followers on Twitter on Thursday to "send me ur dankest memes!!!", and did they ever. Many "funding secured" jokes were made. Whatever you do this weekend, please do not send me your dankest memes.
