PUBLIC SECTOR: Comms boost for Merthyr Tydfil up for consideration

Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is being urged to boost its promotion of the area to a national audience, following a review.

The review, carried out earlier this year by agency Quadrant, is recommending the council ploughs tens of thousands of pounds in extra funding into communications. It is advocating this should be spent on promotional campaigns for inward investment and improvements in internal communications.

The council currently has only one officer handling PR, economic development and European affairs, marketing officer Sara Van Denburgh.

A decision concerning the recommendations will be made within weeks by the Merthyr Strategic Forum, which involves members of the Welsh Development Agency and council officers and members.

The WDA helped the council pay the cost of hiring Quadrant. It is not yet known whether the recommendations will lead to recruitment of additional PR staff.
