Haji-Ioannou lands inaugural gong at PRCA conference

Stelios Haji-Ioannou was named Business Communicator of the Year at last week's annual PRCA conference.

The gong for the easyJet chairman - who won Communicator of the Year at the PRWeek Awards in 2000 - came after a six-strong selection panel whittled down a shortlist of ten including WPP chief executive Sir Martin Sorrell.

Others in the running for the inaugural annual award included British Airways CEO Rod Eddington, Autonomy founder Dr Michael Lynch, Kingfisher CEO Sir Geoff Mulcahy and Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon.

The judges included outgoing PRCA chairman Tom Watson - he was replaced in that role last week by Biss Lancaster founder Graham Lancaster - and Matthew Guarente, contributor to The Business, the PRCA's media partner for the award.

Haji-Ioannou told delegates that when considering how best to manage his own reputation, he preferred to trust his instincts rather than to take advice from PR consultants.
