PUBLIC SECTOR: Second Steps on course from IPR Local Govt Group

The Institute of Public Relations Local Government Group is hosting the next stage in its project to train senior PROs for top-level local authority posts.

The Second Steps course takes place in Harrogate from 20-22 May and is only the second event of its kind. The first course was staged inApril 2001.

The project was initiated to fill a vacuum in the training for those PROs who wanted to progress further within public sector bodies, possibly as far as chief executive.

Course co-ordinator Lynne Mee said: 'This is to ensure we can go the next stage in our careers.'

Among the trainers at this latest event is north-east-based vicar and management trainer, the Reverend Stephen Brown. He aims to show that, through studying dialogue from films, negotiating techniques can be improved.

Other speakers at the event include IPR Local Government Group chair Carl Welham and Jim Odling-Smee, Hertfordshire County Council director of communications.

Caroline McKinlay, Nottingham City Council head of corporate affaris, and James Flynn, a Marina Pirotta Communications director, are also holding sessions at the event.
