40 Under 40 2017: Andy Payment

VP, global communications and events, Verifone, 39

In the rapidly growing fintech industry, Andy Payment has become an invaluable communications resource. In current and past roles at Verifone, First Data, Edelman, and William Mills Agency, Payment has worked with a variety of startups and Fortune 1,000 companies, helping translate very complex business propositions into new client sales, blue chip investments, capital raises, and exits.

When he joined, Verifone had just doubled in size over two years by making more than two dozen acquisitions. The global, publicly held Fortune 1,000 company delivers payment and commerce solutions to B2B clients in more than 150 countries, and it is at the center of conversation around the world’s rapidly evolving retail and commerce models.

In his five years at the company, Payment built Verifone’s global communications organization and integrated PR with other key marketing functions such as events, client communications, and the global partner program.

Payment has played a key role in helping the company shape its transformation story and reimagine its brand image across social media, events, and PR. He has driven internal global culture change using the Cialdini principles, employing new technologies such as podcasting, facilitating user-generated content, global live town halls, and more.

His 12-person team is leading the conversation around payments and commerce in several global markets, and it is partnering with exciting, upcoming brands, such as Joe & the Juice, to create new integrated event experiences.

  • Payment created an internal content studio to help change the way the company and the industry talk about payments and commerce.
  • He believes that as industries undergo a period of rapid, technology-driven disruption, skills such as business acumen, navigation, negotiation, relationship building, and global savvy are critical for comms pros.
  • Payment is active in a number of groups supporting the fintech and payments industries, including the Communications Council of the Electronic Transactions Association.
