DIARY: Spurned agencies shun 'Groucho of the North'

You know the feeling: you lose the pitch, dust yourself down and hit the new biz trail afresh.

Well, not always, it seems. Mancunian PR firms appear to have spun into a tizz after losing out to Brazen PR for the launch of The Circle Club - branded The Groucho of the North by local hacks.

Five firms pitched to Circle MD Dominic Apenteng two months ago, before he decided on Mason Williams breakaway Brazen for 'a mix of economic and creative reasons'. The fact Brazen founder Nina Wheeler and Apenteng attended Bury Grammar School together must have played no role in the win.

But eight weeks on, not a single staffer at any defeated pitcher has joined his media members' lounge, despite Apenteng's claim that the Manchester nightspot has proved attractive to those in the creative industries.

The local branch of ad shop McCann-Erickson is negotiating a group deal, but PROs are staying away: 'I don't want these firms to avoid us as a kneejerk reaction to not winning the pitch,' Apenteng says.
