Legal & General hires ex-Sky and BBC presenter Dharshini David as corporate affairs chief

Insurance giant Legal & General has hired former BBC and Sky journalist and presenter Dharshini David as corporate affairs director.

She joins at the end of March and will responsible for external comms and social responsibility strategy at the listed group, reporting to CEO Nigel Wilson.

David’s predecessor was John Godfrey, who moved to Downing Street in the summer as director of policy under Theresa May.

David was previously business presenter at Sky News and co-presented the channel’s political programme, Sky News Tonight. Before joining Sky in 2009, she worked with Tesco’s board, overhauling and delivering the retailer’s broadcast media strategy.

Before this, David was a financial correspondent and presenter for the BBC in London and New York, where she led the corporation’s Wall Street coverage of the emergence of the financial crisis. She was recruited by the BBC while working on HSBC Investment Bank’s trading floor as its UK economist.

Wilson said: "Dharshini represents a further strengthening of our management team. Her energy, enthusiasm and intellect will play an important role in Legal & General delivering and communicating our financial, economic and social goals."

David said: "In this era of immense uncertainty and change, Legal & General has a crucial role to play in ensuring financial security and wellbeing in our society. I’m extremely excited to join the team as they pursue solutions to the challenges that affect us all – from an ageing population and long-term care to a housing crisis and a lack of investment in physical and digital infrastructure."

Earlier this month, Legal & General reported a 17 per cent rise in profits for 2016, attributed to growth in new business in its retirement division.
