MEDIA: Observer to relaunch its weekly mags

The Observer is to relaunch its two weekly magazines on 21 April.

Observer Life will be rebranded The Observer Magazine, become glossy and shrink slightly in line with the paper's monthly glossy magazines on sport and food.

It will continue to be edited by Life editor Allan Jenkins, with increased coverage of lifestyle, design and fashion.

'The first ten to 15 pages will contain smaller-format pieces, easily digestible morsels,' according to Marc Sands, Guardian Newspapers marketing director.

Ian Tucker was recently hired as commissioning editor from a background on entertainment titles to 'increase the pace' of the magazine (PRWeek, 8 March).

Pagination will increase by between 16 and 28 pages, to an average of 88 pages.

In addition, The Observer's TV coverage, which was repackaged in a small standalone title 18 months ago (PRWeek, 24 November 2000) is to grow to A5 - the same size as the Saturday Guardian's weekly TV and entertainment supplement, The Guide.
