MEDIA: Website revamp sees NoW add to site

The News of the World has revamped its website just months after scaling back on its online activities. editor Ricky Sutton said the move meant the site was 'back to something like its former self'.

After being cut to the hard copy's front page plus just a single story on showbusiness and sport (PRWeek, 23 November 2001), the site now carries five on each topic and five further news stories. A spokeswoman said: 'We are developing the site as we go along and this is part of that.'

Although original content is not part of the online package at present, she added: 'We would not rule it out for the future.'

Launched in 1999, the four million-circulation Sunday tabloid's website was relaunched with a redesign in November 2000. Sutton has been involved with the development of the site for the past two and a half years.

The new-look site is still some way from the time when it carried video and games content, and even featured internet radio broadcasts.

News International stablemate The Times recently began charging for some of its online services (PRWeek, 22 March).
