6 top takeaways from PepsiCo's new sustainability initiative

The food and beverage giant released its 2025 agenda, Performance with Purpose, on Tuesday. It broke down the progress the company has made and the goals it hopes to reach in the next 10 years.

PepsiCo unveiled a CSR agenda on Monday spanning its products, workforce, and geographical locations in a 38-page report that details ambitious goals. Here are six stats that show the breadth of the sustainability project.

Two-thirds – The percentage of its beverages that PepsiCo hopes to have a sugar-related calorie count of 100 or less per 12-ounce serving. To accomplish this, it will tweak its beverages’ formulas, launch smaller pack sizes for full-sugar carbonated soft drinks, and promote lower-calorie beverages. PepsiCo also plans to reduce saturated fat and salt in its food portfolio.

7 million acres – PepsiCo plans to expand its Sustainable Farming Initiative to this size, or about 75% of its entire agricultural based spend. Launched in 2013, with a presence in 15 countries today, the initiative works to spread agricultural practices that are environmentally responsible while increasing crop yields and growers’ livelihoods.

3 billion servings – The number of servings in its Everyday Nutrition program, which reaches underserved communities and consumers, it plans to hit. PepsiCo projects the rate of sales growth for Everyday Nutrition will outpace that of the balance of its product portfolio by 2025.

15% - The improvement PepsiCo expects in its water-use efficiency among agricultural suppliers in high-water-risk sourcing areas. It will involve encouraging irrigation methods and crops that use less water, as well as technology and tools that workers use to save water. PepsiCo will also oversee water runoff on supplier farms to prevent contamination of local surface and ground water. The company will increase water-use efficiency, as well.

20% - PepsiCo’s goal for reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions across its value chain by 2030. Nearly all (93%) of PepsiCo’s carbon footprint comes from agriculture, packaging, third-party transportation, and consumer use of its products .

$100 million – The amount PepsiCo will invest, working with the Pepsi Foundation, in initiatives targeting 12.5 million women and girls. The initiatives will help develop skills in STEM and provide education, workforce training, and support for nutrition, safe water access, infrastructure, and sustainable agriculture.
