Hospice UK hires director of comms and campaigns

Hospice UK, the national charity for hospice care, has hired Sue Wixley as its new director of communications and campaigns. Wixley, who starts at the end of this year, joins from New Philanthropy Capital, where she has led all its marketing and communications activities. She has previously worked for Amnesty International and Oxfam in the UK and South Africa, and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Newgate hires former Wales Office spad to public affairs team

Newgate Communications has hired Dr Tomos Davies, former special adviser in the Wales Office, as associate partner in its public affairs team. Davies will report to Simon Gentry, the newly appointed partner in Newgate’s public affairs practice. Newgate is part of listed group Porta Communications, which last week reported a dip in fee income in the first half of 2016, pointing to the negative impact of the EU referendum on its UK business.

Energy firm OVO names new comms chief

Energy provider OVO has hired Katie Thompson, currently VP of communications for the Guardian's US operation, as its new communications director. She previously worked for Coca-Cola, as well as at Portland Communications, where she led campaigns for brands including Google and Facebook. The firm has also appointed Adam Rostom from Dyson as chief marketing officer.

Aspectus hired for EuroFinance conference 

Aspectus has been appointed by EuroFinance to handle media relations for its International Treasury and Cash Management Conference, which will take place in Vienna from 12 to 14 October. The event attracts nearly 2,000 delegates and speakers from over 50 countries to discuss the current challenges facing group treasurers, financial directors and CFOs.

Nominations open for annual Suzy Spirit Awards

The annual 2017 Suzy Spirit Award for comms professionals is launched today, with two new categories for new and established practitioners. Now in its fourth year, the award was launched by Gorkana in partnership with Suzy Austin’s former employer LEWIS, after she passed away from bowel cancer in July 2012, aged 31. Previous winners include Henry Playfoot, strategy director at Claremont Comms, and Nicola Green, director of comms and reputation at O2.
