PUBLIC SECT0R: Campaign to urge more positive TV views of councils

A TV scriptwriter whose credits include Coronation Street, Bad Girls and Footballers' Wives is expected to spearhead a campaign for fairer coverage of councils on TV.

Phil Ford, a PRO with Staffordshire County Council before taking up scriptwriting full time, will speak at next month's annual conference of council PRO body LG Communications.

Although he was unavailable for comment as PRWeek went to press, he is likely to argue for better images of councils in TV drama.

LG Communications chair elect Richard Scott said TV dramas have a major effect on public perceptions.

He said: 'Any reference to councils usually involves negative images, officials interfering unnecessarily or trivialising council work. Social work is an area that could be presented better, for example.'

He added that US TV drama West Wing was a good example of how politics could be presented in a positive way.
