The PAGB position has been vacant since the death of Barbara Atkinson in August last year. Media and publications manager Fraser Woodward has been acting comms head. The director of comms role has been expanded to take on commercial affairs, reflecting the increased focus on commercial treatments.
Owen, previously with BT, Lloyds Bank and the NHS, said increasing recognition of the importance of OTC treatments in the healthcare system increased the importance of communications.
'Keeping self-care high on the Government's agenda is vital. The opportunities presented by this and the widening of access to medicines need to be carefully managed,' he said.
