AUSTIN, TX: Whole Foods Market has hired Brooke Buchanan as global VP of communications. Her hire was effective on Tuesday.

Based at the company’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, Buchanan is leading Whole Foods’ PR, internal communications, and government affairs, according to a statement. She was not immediately available for comment.

Buchanan joined Whole Foods from Theranos, where she was a VP from last November to July, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Just this week, Vanity Fair published a story on its investigation into Theranos’ downfall, reporting that founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes went against the advice of the company’s top scientists and executives on handling controversies about its blood-testing technology. It also detailed her mid-October 2015 meeting with employees on the topic.

Before Theranos, Buchanan was VP of PR for Williams-Sonoma, where she managed corporate communications and government affairs. She held senior roles at Walmart earlier in her career and was a campaign trail and Capitol Hill aide to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).

Whole Foods has also brought on Sonya Gafsi Oblisk as global VP of marketing. She will lead the company’s marketing, advertising, and brand development, including digital, brand marketing, and customer relationship strategy.

Whole Foods said last year that it is planning a lower-cost and convenience-focused store concept called 365 by Whole Foods. The first location opened in Los Angeles in May.
