IR Society plans for pan-regional body for Europe

LONDON - The Investor Relations Society is calling for closer collaboration with its European counterparts in a bid to kick-off plans for a pan-regional IR body.

IR Society director-general Andrew Hawkins said the move was needed to reflect the EU's plans to create a single market in financial services.

The call comes ahead of the society's annual conference on 18 April, which is set to focus on the IR opportunities presented by the prospect of pan-European capital markets.

Hawkins said: 'We think there's clear evidence of consolidation afoot in the way that the corporate structure is regulated throughout Europe. We are trying to reflect that.'

The society is aiming to create closer ties with European IR groups -- which include associations in Germany, Spain, Italy and Denmark -- and launch a series of meetings later this year with a view to creating a unified body.

'We have got to the stage where we ought to have a grown up discussion at an EU level,' added Hawkins.
