Edelman's Wayne Hickey joins Weber Shandwick as senior tech strategist

Hickey worked at Edelman for eight years and led its Microsoft account.

SAN FRANCISCO: Weber Shandwick has hired Wayne Hickey, formerly of Edelman, as EVP and senior technology strategist.

Hickey will take on the newly created role next month, reporting to Sara Gavin, president of North America. His responsibilities will include working with clients and internal client teams across practice areas in North America to develop and tell clients’ technology stories. He will also work closely with Brad Williams, leader of global tech practice.

"Every client has a tech story now, whether it's fintech or health IT or b-to-b," said Gavin. "We’re really focused on making sure we are helping clients almost in every category pull out that tech story."

Hickey is returning to Weber after eight years at Edelman, where he began as an EVP and led the firm’s Microsoft account. He also served as MD of Assembly, Edelman’s team dedicated to Microsoft. Hickey was most recently GM of the independent firm’s San Francisco office.

Previously, Hickey spent six years in Weber’s Seattle office and founded its digital entertainment practice. He also worked at MWW and as a legislative aide to Rep. Duncan Hunter Sr. (R-CA)

"Tech is a vertical sector in a way, but we certainly seeing the power of tech start to thread across most of our practices and clients," Gavin said. "Bringing that convergence is something we’ve been doing and something our clients have been wanting. We wanted to add the muscle and perspective to that."
