The deal has seen fellow director Dave Greenwood take a minority stake, with the agency’s existing owners Stephen and Karen Browne retaining a minority stake. Karen Browne has taken the new role of chairman.

The value of the deal has not been disclosed, although William Murray said the MBO was achieved without any external financial support. There are no changes to the current board of directors.

William Murray, based in Croydon, was founded in 1989 and was ranked 93rd in PRWeek’s UK Top 150 PR Consultancies list for 2015 with revenue of £2.2m, representing growth of 15 per cent on the previous year. It employed 25 people at the end of 2015.

Its clients include Unilever Food Solutions, UCC Coffee UK & Ireland, Quorn, The Ascott Limited and BRITA.

Murray said: "While we can be proud of our achievements so far, we have big plans for the future.

"Over the past two decades the agency has grown substantially and we’ve adapted our offer to include digital, copywriting and marketing. We have an exciting journey ahead and I’m looking forward to the future."
