Watch: Don Baer on the Republican Convention's opening night

Political veteran and Burson-Marsteller CEO Don Baer chats with PRWeek about the opening night of the Republican National Convention, the controversy over Melania Trump's speech, social media, and his connection to The West Wing.

The first night of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland included a number of missed opportunities, according to Don Baer, former White House communications director in the Clinton administration and Burson-Marsteller’s global CEO.

"Overall, there’s a feeling that it just didn’t gel," the politics veteran said at the bustling Politico Hub in downtown Cleveland on Tuesday.

He contended that the controversy over Melania Trump’s Monday night speech is more than a media dust-up, saying it reflects poorly on the candidate himself.

"Running a campaign is no small enterprise. It’s a huge business that comes together really quickly and needs to have discipline and creativity," Baer commented. "It’s clear they don’t have the adult supervision or else this could not have happened. The real question is does it reflect on some larger problems about Donald Trump and how he’s running his campaign and how he would run the country?"
