A Chinese bank has been vilified online after a video showing its staff being spanked went viral.
Eight employees of the Changzhi Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank were recorded on stage as part of a training day for the bank. Of the more than 200 attending the seminar, the eight were the lowest scoring.
The trainer, Jiang Yang, who works for an external training company, is seen shouting at the staff and then hitting them on the backside with what looks like a stick.
After asking them why they underperformed at training, some respond saying "I did not exceed myself" and that they didn’t perform well enough.
Yang then spanks them in turn at least four times, with one woman appearing to physically recoil in pain.

According to a statement from the local Changzhi government, some staff were further punished by having their hair cut.
The local banking regulator has launched an investigation of the incident, ordered the training courses to be immediately stopped, and suspended two of the Changzhi bank’s senior executives.
Jiang has posted a video apology in which he says the spanking had nothing to do with the bank’s leadership and that it is a training method he has used for years.
The bank has yet to issue any comment on the matter.
