Ryanair price hikes from Brussels 'entirely untrue', says airline's comms chief

Ryanair has denied ramping up the cost of its flights to and from Brussels following the terror attacks in the Belgian capital on Tuesday, saying that media coverage of its pricing has been misleading.

Following the attacks in Brussels, budget airline Ryanair has received criticism for charging passengers up to £6,000 to fly back home.

Several national media outlets reported that a group of 28 passengers returning to Manchester had been told by Ryanair that it would cost them an extra £6,000. The issue was brought up in the House of Commons, having also angered Twitter users.

Robin Kiely, head of comms at Ryanair, told PRWeek the reports were "entirely untrue".

He added: "Given it’s the Easter holiday period, most of our flights are full, and like all airlines, fares only rise when the lowest fare classes sell out."

Ryanair has also released this statement: "This group of 28 passengers were travelling from Brussels Charleroi to Manchester (on Wednesday) at a fare of £20 each.

"They arrived at the ticket desk in Brussels Charleroi on Tuesday morning requesting to change their flight from Brussels Charleroi to Tuesday and in common with all other passengers were offered this change at our change fee (£60) plus the upgrade to the available fare (£154) on last evening’s flight.

"The reason for the upgrade is that there were only 28 seats remaining on last evening’s flight.

"This group declined to accept this change offer as is their right and we look forward to welcoming them on their scheduled flight from Brussels Charleroi today.

"As of 1.30pm yesterday, there were only 12 seats remaining on last evening’s flight from Brussels Charleroi to Manchester as Ryanair has been prioritising free changes and transfers for passengers travelling on flights to and from Brussels Zaventem on Tuesday and Wednesday."

"We regret any inconvenience caused to this group but our priority today remains re-accommodating our disrupted Brussels Zaventem passengers, and all other passengers are free to avail of our change facility in the normal manner."
