International law firm Baker & McKenzie has hired John McGuinness as associate director of communications for Asia-Pacific, based in Singapore.

McGuinness joins after eight years at Barclays, where he was most recently the bank’s vice president of corporate communications for Southeast Asia and Australia.

Before that, McGuinness was a journalist and has 13 years’ experience across the media and communications industries.

In his new role, McGuinness will handle internal and external comms for Baker & McKenzie, while building the firm’s traditional and social media presence across its 17 offices throughout APAC.

"As the largest and most well regarded law firm in the Asia Pacific region, I am very excited to be taking up this role with Baker & McKenzie," McGuinness said.

"As law firms grapple with robust competition and disruptive new market entrants, having a strong communications function is vital to staying ahead of the curve, and I am pleased to be joining just such a team."

Will White, Baker & McKenzie’s global director of communications, said: "I am delighted to welcome John to our global and regional communications teams.

"His wide experience in public relations and internal engagement for financial and professional services organizations means this is a significant appointment for Baker & McKenzie and we are lucky to have him on board
