FleishmanHillard names JJ Carter as first global COO

ST. LOUIS: FleishmanHillard has appointed JJ Carter as the firm’s first global COO. He was also named president of the Americas.

Reporting to Fleishman president and CEO John Saunders, Carter will be responsible for the worldwide business operations of the firm. His main focus will be on "enhancing the FleishmanHillard experience" for its employees, clients, agency partners, and within Omnicom Group’s DAS division, the firm said in a statement.

Carter has worked at Fleishman since 2005. He previously served as president of its US East and West regions, Canada, and Mexico. Since joining the firm, he has led a variety of key growth areas, including one of the agency’s largest offices in San Francisco and one of its biggest clients, Visa, as global client relationship manager. In 2007, he helped to launch the agency’s global sports marketing practice.

Before Fleishman, he served as director of PR and digital properties for the international Association of Tennis Professionals and was director of PR for the NBA’s Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks.

Carter stepped into the role on Wednesday. His previous responsibilities as Fleishman’s president of the US East and West regions, Canada, and Mexico are being consolidated within his new job.

He will be working closely with Fleishman’s general managers and regional presidents in the Americas to ensure the firm delivers "the client experience that people have come to expect of Fleishman," Carter said.

"[Fleishman] needs to be able to continue to reinvest in new and exciting capabilities," he added.

As COO, he will work closely with Saunders on corporate decisions.

"While JJ has worked extensively for clients across the globe, I feel it is the right time for him to take on deeper responsibility for our businesses outside the Americas," said Saunders. "Additionally, [this new role] is a recognition on my part that I am a relative newcomer to the Americas [as a Dublin, Ireland, native] and I need to have someone of JJ’s acumen standing shoulder-to-shoulder with me."

Previous Americas president Jack Modzelewski is taking on the role of global president of business development and partnerships, focused on helping clients address their business and marketplace challenges.

Modzelewski has served as president of the Americas since 2011.

Carter’s promotion follows Saunders’ transition in November from president of the firm’s EMEA region to global president and CEO. Saunders replaced Dave Senay, who worked at Fleishman for 32 years, in the top position.

In August, former Fleishman global vice chairman of operations Guillaume Herbette left the firm to take over the dual role of MSLGroup CEO and EVP of Publicis Worldwide. He succeeded Olivier Fleurot as MSLGroup’s chief executive, reporting directly to Publicis Worldwide president Arthur Sadoun, who had taken over direct supervision of MSLGroup.

Fleishman also named GMs of its New York and Los Angeles offices in recent months, appointing Ephraim Cohen and Mitch Germann to the respective roles.

Last May, Robert Dowling, former Fleishman US East Region president and GM of New York left the firm. He launched his own shop, called Hudson Cutler & Co., in November.
