The agency, headed by the eponymous Gershon, was reappointed without a competitive pitch.
Gershon started working with JD Wetherspoon in 1990 when the company had a dozen pubs, and he signed his first contract with the group the following year. His current four-year deal expires next summer, and the new contract will then last until August 2021.
Eddie Gershon Media Relations handles all PR for Wetherspoon's, including consumer comms, b2b and financial PR, and crisis management. It also looks after the press office.
In addition, Gershon himself edits Wetherspoon’s customer magazine, Wetherspoon News, which is distributed in its pubs.
Gershon said: "Wetherspoon's is an outstanding business and an outstanding company. I’ve always enjoyed handling its PR and look forward to doing it until at least the summer of 2021, and hopefully beyond that."
Wetherspoon's currently operates almost 1,000 pubs across the UK and a handful in Ireland.
The group’s chairman Tim Martin is arguably the most high profile figure in the UK pub sector, and is known to be outspoken on issues ranging from the EU to tax on supermarkets. Last week he hit the headlines after criticising Jamie Oliver’s campaign for a sugar tax, accusing the celebrity chef of "showboating" over the issue.
Other clients of Eddie Gershon Media Relations include restaurant brands Prezzo and Chimichanga, plus motorway services operator Welcome Break, and the Jacques Borel VAT Club, which campaigns for lower VAT on hospitality sector.
