The X Factor reveals social media twist to bring in viewers

For the first time, viewers can vote whether Simon Cowell, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, Rita Ora or Nick Grimshaw will mentor the different categories: girls, boys, groups and 'overs' - those over a certain age, this year's cut-off being 25. They can vote using a Twitter hashtag with the name of their chosen judge followed by the category, such as #SimonOvers or #CherylGroups.

The vote will open on Twitter this Saturday during the broadcast of the first episode on ITV. The judges are expected to start campaigning on social media, asking their fans to help them land the winning category.

Results of the vote will be shared during filming of the Bootcamp at Wembley Arena.

This series will also see the judges' houses round broadcast live from various locations around the world.

The X Factor will be looking to out-rate its TV rival Strictly Come Dancing, which begins in September.
