Byrne will report to Alison Bakunowich, vice-president of creative, marketing and comms for Comedy Central and Nickelodeon UK and Ireland.
As digital director, Byrne will create and implement the strategy for Comedy Central’s UK website. Since its relaunch in June 2014, the site has had 10 consecutive months of growth.
Byrne said that his job description involved solving a "really fun problem". He is tasked with delivering comedy-specific content to readers and generating sources of sustainable revenue.
He was poached from Buzzfeed UK where he was working as associate creative director. He previously worked on campaigns with brands including Sony, American Express, Fiat and Starbucks.
Before this, Byrne was a social media specialist at creative agency In The Company of Huskies where clients included Vodafone, Coke and Guinness.
