PORTLAND, OR: Waggener Edstrom Communications has appointed Wunderman’s Kass Sells to serve as the firm’s president of North America. Sells, most recently MD and global client leader for Microsoft at Wunderman, succeeds Jenny Moede, who moved into the newly created role of chief business development officer at the agency last summer. In the interim, the responsibilities of the North American president role were handled by COO Jennifer Granston Foster and cofounder Pam Edstrom.

WASHINGTON: Powell Tate, Weber Shandwick’s Washington, DC-based PR firm, has promoted Peter Carson to MD of public affairs. Carson, who joined the agency in 2007, has most recently been in charge of the healthcare public affairs practice. He also worked with Powell Tate’s financial services clients.

NEW YORK: Highwire PR has expanded its footprint in the US with a New York office, senior hires, and new clients. SVP Kim Paone is leading the New York office, which has been in development for the last six months. Other new staffers include VP Shannon Gomes, who will lead consumer food and food tech; VP Elliott Suthers; VP Jill read; and VP Shari Foldes. Some of the firm’s new consumer clients include the California Strawberry Commission, Brioche Pasquier US, and Zolt. The new hires will also work on accounts such as Actian, Dtex, Cylance, OWASP, and Zscaler.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA: Tanis Communications has opened an office in Austin, Texas as a way to continue serving important technology markets. The firm, which also has offices in Silicon Valley and New York, brought on account director Paul Gaither in March to lead the new office. Gaither has previously worked in corporate communications at Freescale, Texas Instruments, and Nortel Networks.
