Jennifer Handshew has been charged with setting up an office on Third Avenue. She will become the agency's director of North America and will begin the recruitment process shortly.

Handshew's responsiblities will include overseeing client relationships, providing strategic counsel and driving social media.

Berkeley PR has previously used 14 licensed partners to establish a global presence across 26 countries. The agency has confirmed it will continue to work with Vantage Communications, based in San Francisco.

Chris Hewitt, chief executive of Berkeley PR, said the firm has built its reputation on helping US companies grow their European profile and the time is right to set up shop in New York.

He said: "This is an exciting development for us and is already generating a lot of interest among our UK clients, who may not command the resources to execute PR strategies in the US but believe in our storytelling approach."
Berkeley PR currently represents two-factor authentication firm SecurEnvoy and networking specialist Adax in the US. It also has a handful of US-headquartered clients including Iron Mountain, Epicor, Gigya and Netgear.

With a dedicated presence in New York, it will now be in a position to offer existing clients PR services in their home territory and also pitch for local accounts.
