The 'non-dom' rule allows some wealthy UK residents to limit the tax paid on earnings outside the country.
According to research by Talkwalker, Labour's non-dom initiative has received almost twice as many social responses as the EU referendum in the past seven days, which includes social reaction to the leaders’ debate.
Over the past 24 hours, 60 per cent of those commenting on the issue felt negatively towards non-dom status, and only 11 per cent were positive. Respondents were 74 per cent male and 26 per cent female.
The most heavily retweeted comment (500 retweets) was by Guardian commentator Owen Jones suggesting the policy is a "real win". Economist Will Hutton’s tweet commending Labour’s "tax fairness" was also heavily retweeted.
Talkwalker CEO Robert Glaesener said: "Miliband has hit a chord, especially for such a specific piece of regulation, which has no track record of debate, unlike for instance the EU referendum, immigration or the NHS."
