Rising star: Gemma Nelson, social media manager, Ordnance Survey

Gemma Nelson, 37, already had nine years' experience in internal comms and as a press officer at Ordnance Survey when she spotted that the social media department was understaffed and underperforming at the Government-owned map-maker.

OS business was by then 90 per cent digital. Nelson installed herself as the organisation’s first social media manager three years ago and since then readership of the OS blog has gone from 2,000 to 18,000 a week.

"She has created a social media platform that is one of the leading operations across Government," says Rob Andrews, head of media at OS.

"What is really amazing is her ability to produce high-quality, engaging content from what in other hands could be quite dry material. She has taken it from being a tick-box exercise to a huge success."
