Golin 'shakes up' recruitment with mentoring scheme to increase diversity

Golin has partnered with the Taylor Bennett Foundation (TBF) for an initiative aimed at boosting diversity across the PR industry.

Taylor Bennett, a comms recruitment firm, set up the foundation in 2008 to address the lack of people from black, Asian and ethnic minority (BAME) and non-privileged backgrounds working in the PR industry.

Together with Golin it has launched a scheme in which six agency staff will mentor students graduating from TBF’s PR training programme. The mentors will act as coaches to the graduates throughout their career in PR; some graduates are already in first-time jobs or interning at different agencies.

Rather than acting as a stepping stone to a permanenet job at Golin, the relationships will continue indefinitely, with mentors providing support around career and skills development as well as setting key goals for students.

Volunteers have been matched to mentees according to educational background, career experience and personal interests.

Bibi Hilton, Golin MD, said: "Opening up our agency and our industry to people from a wide range of backgrounds, with their own individual set of experiences, will help us continue to deliver outstanding creative for our clients. This is the first step in a disruptive plan to shake up our recruitment in 2015."

The next batch of students graduating from TBF will be in April, with Golin preparing to select six more mentors.
