Portland hires British Embassy's Smith as it expands in DC

He will focus on advising clients on media and digital engagement.

The former head of digital diplomacy at the British Embassy in Washington, DC, Scott Nolan Smith, has joined Portland’s nearly four-month-old office in the nation’s capital as associate director.

Smith’s role will include advising clients on media and digital engagement strategy, international affairs, diplomatic communications, and digital transformation. He will report to David MacKay, GM for the US at Portland.

Smith said the role will also include "integrating digital into the framework of government and into the framework of international affairs."

Smith is also the co-founder and a board member at the Digital Diplomacy Coalition and an instructor at George Washington University since last January, according to his LinkedIn account.

He said the coalition collaborated with the firm on an event at Georgetown University and the two organizations may continue to work together.

Before leading digital strategy at the British Embassy in DC, Smith held roles including social media manager and writer at the Washington bureau of RT and as an editor and producer at politics.com, according to his LinkedIn account.
